Before I Raised
the White Flag
I wrote these lyrics back in 2013, during the early days of my relationship with my partner. We were still figuring things out, and petty fights were almost a regular occurrence. Sometimes, the tiniest disagreement could turn into an argument that made breaking up feel like a real possibility.
Those uncertain moments inspired me to write these words. I guess I was trying to put into lyrics what I couldn’t always say out loud: the frustration, the fear of losing someone, and the strange feeling of loving someone so much that you would rather surrender than let them go.
Rediscovering these lyrics years later made me stop and think, “Wow. I actually wrote this?”
And to think, this was 2013, long before AI-assisted writing became common. It was just me, my emotions, and whatever words I could find to express them.
Looking back, there’s something both amusing and touching about meeting that younger version of myself again. Someone who believed so fiercely in forever, yet feared that one small argument could bring it all crashing down.
So here’s a little piece of me from 2013, preserved exactly as I wrote it.
White Flag
You and Me
We both know we belong together
Why unsatisfied in forever, still?
You and Me
What did happened to “together”?
Why you left my dreams of forever, yeah
I think I pushed you too far
I think you don’t wanna go that far
in an instance that I wanna start.
I think I tainted you away
of all the efforts that I made.
Is being too committed
a bad bad thing?
How could I live my life if being with you is life to me?
How could I live my life if without you is death to me?
And I raise my hand.
This white flag that I’m waving
Hoping that you’ll save me,
is a sign that i’m telling—
This white flag that I’m waving
Hoping that you’ll save me,
is a sign that i’m telling—
That I raise my hand,
and I’ll give it all up to you.
